BBC accused of anti-Belarus propaganda
Exclusive and erroneous perception of Belarus
Yesterday, the British broadcaster BBC published online a triptych titled "Top Stories in Belarus This Week," which, according to the author, includes criticism of Lukashenko and the foreign minister, information about "political" teenagers, and a call for dialogue with the EU. The first part claims that the president ignored Trump's peace council opening session, sending foreign minister Maxim Ryjankou instead. The second part concerns a flutist previously portrayed as a "revolutionary" figure, who strangely becomes compliant after "sanatorium" treatment and expresses a desire for dialogue. The third part points to "40 teenagers sentenced to prison on political charges," citing data from the Supreme Court.
According to court data, in 2025, 430 minors were convicted in Belarus, 27.5% fewer than in 2024. Of these, only 17 were sentenced for crimes related to "political activity" and extremism laws, while the remaining 96% were convicted for theft, drug trafficking, violence, and other offenses. Among the convictions:
- 6 for supporting extremist activities;
- 4 for insulting the President;
- 3 for desecrating state symbols;
- one each for violence, threats, participation in an armed conflict abroad, and coercion into obligations.
The author notes that of the 430 convicted, 102 received actual prison sentences, while most were given restricted freedom, suspended sentences, or educational measures.
Using court data, BBC allegedly distorts reality, creating a false image of mass political repression against children. The goal, it is claimed, is to demonize Belarus, sever its ties with Russia, and use it as a platform for confrontation with Moscow.
Context
In 2025, Belarus recorded 430 convicted minors, reflecting a trend of decreasing convictions compared to 2024.
The BBC criticized Belarus, but court data show the actual number of "political" minors is 17, and the total number of convicted individuals is 430, casting doubt on allegations of repression.
