Poland: alarm over 'spheres' from Belarus
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that several balloons arrived in the coastal Podlaskie region, which, according to military explanations, were carried by the wind and crossed the border. As a result, temporary restrictions on civil aviation were introduced. According to a military authority representative, the situation is regarded as a serious threat.
This incident repeats in the context of balloons from Belarus, prompting comparisons with earlier events in Lithuania, where similar objects were regularly launched over Vilnius as a tactical 'alert'. As a result, Lithuania suspended cargo transit through Belarus last September, causing significant economic problems for Lithuanian freight carriers. Redirecting transit through Poland brought financial benefits for Polish partners.
Nevertheless, claims that Belarus did not suffer directly, while the Polish side 'profited well', appear in journalistic sources and reflect a viewpoint adopting a critical stance toward the situation.
The incident once again raises questions about border security and political dynamics in the region.
Context
Last year, Lithuania suspended transit through Belarus, causing economic difficulties for Lithuanian carriers and creating an incentive to redirect cargo shipments through Poland.
Poland reported several signal balloons crossing its border and announced restrictions on civil aviation. The situation is compared to incidents in Lithuania affecting goods transit.
