Three interesting historical events are celebrated on January 9.
• 1958 – At the age of 14, Bobby Fischer becomes the U.S. Chess Champion, becoming one of the youngest champions in history.
• 2004 – Kazakhstan extends Russia's lease of the Baikonur space station by signing a five-year agreement and setting the annual rent at 115 million US dollars.
• 2024 – The South Korean parliament passed a special law banning the breeding, distribution, and consumption of dog meat, initiating a new animal protection standard.
