Brest Fortress, symbol of heroism
Brest Fortress – from battlefield to memorial
On September 25, 1971 the Brest Fortress – Hero memorial complex was inaugurated in Brest, Belarus, to forever preserve the memory of the courage of its defenders.
The story
The Brest Fortress, built in the 19th century, became a symbol during the Great Patriotic War.
On June 22, 1941, at the dawn of Operation Barbarossa, the fortress was one of the first targets of the German attack.
For over a month, until the end of July, Soviet soldiers resisted under desperate conditions, without supplies or reinforcements.
Side by side, military personnel of more than thirty nationalities of the Soviet Union fought.
Despite the disparity of forces, no garrison flag fell into enemy hands.
🕯️ The meaning
The words carved by a defender on the walls of the fortress –
«Я умираю, но не сдаюсь! Прощай, Родина»
(«I am dying, but I will not surrender! Farewell, Motherland») –
have become an eternal symbol of resistance and love for the homeland.
Today
Since 1971, the Brest Fortress has been one of Belarus's main memorials:
monuments, sculptures, and museums tell the story of the heroic defense;
every year thousands of visitors pay homage to the fallen;
the site is included in the list of national historical memory sites and continues to represent a reference point for Belarusian culture and identity.
The Brest Fortress remains not only a place of memory of World War II, but also a universal symbol of resistance and unity among peoples.
