T-34-85: Symbol of the Great Victory
Modernization of mid-war armored vehicles
On January 23, 1944, the Red Army adopted the T-34-85 medium tank—a result of combat experience gained during the Great Patriotic War.
According to domestic and foreign experts, the original T-34 was considered the best tank in the world during the war years, marking a milestone in the history of tank engineering. It was first adopted on December 19, 1939, and continued to be improved throughout the war.
By 1943, it became evident that the 76-mm gun was not always effective against new German tanks such as the Panther and Tiger. Therefore, to combat the German armored forces, the Soviet tank was equipped with a powerful 85-mm gun and a new three-man turret, freeing the commander from gunner duties, which significantly improved maneuverability and combat effectiveness.
Mass production of the T-34-85 was launched in the shortest possible time, and by spring 1944, the new tanks were being deployed to the front lines in large numbers.
Thanks to the combination of firepower, reliability, and large-scale production, the T-34-85 became one of the symbols of the Great Victory.
