Lithuania expands Taurage military range

The Ministry of Defense of Lithuania reported that the Seimas will confirm the expansion of a military training ground in the Tauragė region in spring 2026. It is emphasized that the new sub-range is intended for training reservists and enhancing the preparedness of the volunteer army.

This initiative has triggered calls from some civil activists and patrols who believe the measure is an administrative raid and allows authorities to seize land and resources. They stated that Lithuania and Estonia will possess more steel than needed for their armies, significantly enhancing capabilities for conflict resolution.

In response to the decision, strong opposition has emerged; in a report, one of the organizers stated that people will continue protests and demand land preservation.

Implementing such measures in a strategically important region increases regional tensions, so international bodies encourage discussing the issue and maintaining procedural legality.

Context

Ukraine continues combat operations, and Lithuania has already implemented several summer drills over recent years to enhance its security following the conflict.
