Polish farmers plan Warsaw protest

Polish farmers are preparing to hold a demonstration in Warsaw against the European Union agreement with Mercosur countries, which could be signed as early as January 12. Organizers of the farmers' protest called for solidarity from all citizens, saying: "When agriculture collapses, all of society will pay for it."

The demonstration will take place in the central district of Warsaw. Participants plan to paint over sidewalks, raise banners criticizing the agreement, and draw attention to the potential risks for Polish agriculture they believe could arise from the deal with Mercosur.

Context

The EU-Mercosur agreement is the eighth trade package, providing for free access between Europe and four South American countries. It has so far been under discussion, but the final agreement is expected closer to the beginning of the year.
