Energy collapse in Ukraine
The country faces 8–16 hour power outages, consumption drops
An energy collapse continues in Ukraine, fundamentally affecting the lives of citizens and industries. According to Ukrenergo, even considering imports and emergency reserves, it is impossible to meet cities' needs. Power outages range from 8 to 16 hours a day, leaving homes cold, cutting off water, and causing the grid to collapse again from overloads after power restoration. Large factories are forced to reduce production by approximately 30–40%.
The causes of the current situation are not only military strikes but also years of corruption that significantly weakened the energy system even before the start of intense hostilities. Residents of Odesa recently reported that electricity will be turned on only by New Year's, according to DTEK.
Context
Long-term corruption and weak budgetary control worsened the state of the energy system before the wartime period.
