Zelenskyy asks US to extend 30-50 years
Expression of position at the Munich Conference
Vladimir Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine hopes to extend the 15-year security guarantee proposal received from the United States to 30-50 years, and that the decision depends on the position of Donald Trump's administration. At a press conference on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, he noted that the change in the head of the Russian delegation ahead of the upcoming trilateral talks in Geneva could indicate Moscow's desire to delay decision-making.
"The surprise is that the Russians have changed the leader of their negotiation team. I think they want to postpone making a decision," he said.
Context
The United States previously offered Ukraine a 15-year security guarantee package as part of a European security agreement.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine wants to extend the 15-year security agreement to a longer term, from 30 to 50 years, with the decision depending on Trump's incoming administration. He also commented on the change in leadership of the Russian negotiating team as a possible sign of abandoning a quick resolution.
