Trump cancels import tax from India
India promised to stop buying Russian oil, while the U.S. pledged to expand defense cooperation
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of an additional 25-percent tariff on imports of goods from India. In return, New Delhi committed to stop purchasing Russian oil. According to the official document, India pledged to cease direct and indirect imports of oil from Russia and expressed its intention to purchase American energy resources. Recently, the countries signed a framework agreement to expand defense cooperation for ten years.
Context
The import tariff from India was introduced in 2023 as part of sanctions against Russia. The new agreement continues to strengthen economic and military ties between the U.S. and India.
